Tumbulgum NSW 2490 – Meeting Place of Waters

Tumbulgum NSW 2490 was established in 1866 and is the premier rural village in the Tweed Shire. The tiny riverside village located at the confluence of the Rous (North Arm) and Tweed Rivers overlooked by the iconic and majestic Wollumbin Mount Warning and surrounding Border Ranges.

The Region Area   

Tweed Valley caldera formed by the collapse and erosion of the “Tweed Volcano” and lies at the heart of the area.  NSW Tourism describes this region as Australia’s Green Cauldron.   

Beautiful Tumbulgum is surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges with World Heritage rainforests, fields of cane, lush farms and grazing cattle, spectacular uncrowded beaches, history, community and spirituality. It’s no wonder the Tweed Valley attracts a diverse population of artists, professionals and those seeking a more relaxed lifestyle, who choose to live and work here.

Beaches Nearby

​Within 20 minutes of Tumbulgum are the fabulous Gold Coast and Northern NSW best beaches. Coolangatta International Airport and the business centres of Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads are 15 minutes from Tumbulgum. Making Tumbulgum the most desirable and conveniently located of the Tweed Shire’s rural villages.

Things to Do in Tumbulgum 

There are many great things to do in Tumbulgum and nearby. Tumbulgum village amenities include a heritage walking trail, a great choice of eateries, historic tavern, Tumbulgum Community Hall, Tumbulgum Public School, Rangers Sports Club, Post Office, General store, land tours, river cruises, and picnic areas along the river bank.

Tumbulgum Distillery Tours

Husk Distillers is a short 5 minute walk across the bridge from Tumbulgum village. The working rum and gin distillery runs tours, tastings from their cellar door and café from Wednesday to Sunday. Photo opportunities are abound here so make sure you have your camera in easy reach.  

For those arriving by water, a public wharf is located at the historic Tumbulgum Tavern p;is a jetty and boat ramp near the Ferryside General Store / Post Office.  

Natures Gifts

Tumbulgum and North Tumbulgum share the postcode 2490 and many environmental treasures. Stotts Island Nature Reserve is 77 hectares (190 acres) and an excellent example of lowland sub-tropical rainforest as to is Duroby Nature Reserve and Skinners Reserve.  It’s both an historic and contemporary hidden gem tucked away off the busy Tweed Valley Way.

Walk in History  

TUMBULGUM HERITAGE TRAIL was established in 2013 by Sue and Brian Breckenridge, long-term residents and active members of Tumbulgum Community Association. In 1999 Tweed Shire Council named Tumbulgum’s sports field, “The Brian Breckenridge Field” in recognition of his commitment since 1959 and to cricket and soccer in Tumbulgum. 

Permanent signs, depicting life in Tumbulgum’s past, have been installed at 12 sites identified of historical significance. The trail is a flat walk and takes approx. 40-50 minutes. A map of the trail is available from the Ferryside General Store and displayed in the window of the Community Hall.

Getting Around  

A return bus service is available from Tweed Heads to Murwillumbah. Bus 605 – Tweed Heads -Tweed City – Terranora – Tumbulgum – Condong – Murwillumbah. Taxis and Uber available but limited. To see the best of the Tweed, you need a car. Car Rental hire is available at the Gold Coast Airport and multiple locations on the Gold Coast.

Where to Stay in Tumbulgum?

Accommodation in Tumbulgum is limited to holiday houses by the river. A boutique motel in the village is in the pipeline but still a little way off. Several Tumbulgum residents offer their homes for short stays and weekend getaways through either Booking.com or HomeAway.
