It’s just an hour south from the capital of Brisbane and offers a range of fun and exciting activities for all ages. The city’s major drawcards are the family-friendly Gold Coast Big 4 amusement parks (Seaworld, Dreamworld, Movie World and Wet’n’Wild Water Park). But, the Gold Coast is home to some of Australia’s most awarded craft beers and breweries.

Gone are the days when you’d find yourself in a nearby surf club, drinking VB or Queensland’s most famous XXXX beer. With the emerging culture of boutique breweries along the Australian coast, comes a whole new range of craft beers and Pale Ales to discover in fabulous locations.

Whether you’re a seasoned beer connoisseur or fascinated by the behind-the-scene workings of a brewery, there is a selection of craft breweries and tours on the Gold Coast to suit any beer enthusiast. Either way, you can sample delicious award-winning Gold Coast beers straight from the brewery taps or their take away beers are also often available from liquor stockists nearby.

Here’s 5 Must-Visit Gold Coast Craft Breweries. 

1. Black Hops Brewing

At 15 Gardenia Grove, in the popular suburb of Burleigh Heads and is home to Black Hops Brewery. The original brewery was crowdfunded on social media and came to life in 2015. It is still one of the premier breweries in the area and a great place to start your brewery hopping adventures when you venture to the Gold Coast.

The taproom has 14 unique craft beers to choose from. You can drink them off the tap, straight from the source or indulge in a tasting paddle. Black Hops Brewery has a second production brewery and taproom in at 671 Pine Ridge Road, Biggera Waters. Well worth checking out too. Not only this, both Black Hops taprooms are family and pet-friendly and a great meeting place for groups under 10 people.

Brewery and taprooms opening hours are between midday and 7pm from Wednesday to Friday and on weekends the doors open midday to 6pm.

2. Balter Brewing

Looking for a combination of brewery and bar? Well, Balter Brewing is the perfect setting for you! There is no better place to taste the offerings of the modern industrial brewery than within the Balter Brewing bar and cellar door. You can taste the award-winning Balter XPA or any of their other brews on tap or from ‘tinnies’ created on the premises. Balter XPA is made for those who enjoy ease to drink fully-hopped beer.

You can find Balter Brewing Company in Currumbin, at 14 Traders Way. They are open on a Wednesday and Thursday from 3pm until 8pm, Fridays until 9pm. Saturdays you have the biggest window, midday until 8pm and Sundays between midday and 7pm. On a Friday you have the option of choosing from some of the most popular food trucks in the area which park up right outside! It does not get much better than this.

Brewery Tours

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Balter runs small group brewery tours. There is 10 spots available at each session which gives everyone the opportunity to see how Balter craft beers are made. Individuals or groups are best to pre-booked to be guaranteed a spot.

3. Lost Palms Brewing Co.

Different to the Miami that we all know in Florida, USA, there is a Gold Coast suburb of the same name. On Oak Avenue is an Instagram-worthy drinking den that attracts loads of attention. Lost Palms Brewing Co venue is decorated with pastel coloured walls that reflect the brand and fun Miami vibes. The aesthetic of this brewing company is just as good as the beer they serve.

It not all about the outside of course, what’s going on inside matters just as much. Inside is where locals gather for the Lost Palms staples from crisp lagers to IPA brews. The locals have also grown fond of LP’s highly unusual brews like their  signature key lime pie sour and smoked maple Porter. 300 DAYS OF SUNSHINE 3% is inspired by the 300 days of sunshine that the Gold Coast is blessed with each year. It has a nice body, clean and packed with flavour.

Apart from the drinks and the view, one of the things that makes this brewery stand out is how it has embraced the local community and Gold Coast artists. Beer cans and packaging are designed by local artists in collaboration with the brewers.

You can join the locals here over the weekends. Opening hours are Friday and Saturday from midday until 9pm and Sunday they shut a little earlier at 7pm to give everyone a chance to recover before work on Monday morning!

Miami Gold Coast

4. 4 Pines X Boardriders Coolangatta

4 Pines Coolangatta is a short 100 metre stroll from the one of the best surf beaches on the Gold Coast. It sits on the busy ‘Strand”, a popular shopping strip and eating hub. Although, this isn’t an operating brewery, it the perfect location to eat and drink.

The 4 Pines bar is made from reclaimed wood and bedazzled by big bulb garland lights that spotlight 6 of their finest beers. There are also a good selection of bottled beers and an eclectic blend of beer-inspired cocktails to choose from.

This happening place is open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch, with dinner service available from Wednesdays. Soon 4 Pines Coolangatta will be pumping out some unique beers from their newly installed Smart Brew Kit. Happy-Hour is from 4-6pm Monday to Friday with $6 pints, Chunks and House Wine.

5. Aardvark and Arrow Brewery

This microbrewery small batch brew-house at Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast is creating speciality craft beers in new ways. Aardvark & Arrow produce chemical and preservative free beer and cider in a casual atmosphere that is hangover-proof, refreshing and sparkling clear.

Their beers are typically ‘Hand Crafted’ in small volumes which means the brewers can better cater to customer requests in terms of beer design. The Aardvark & Arrow team love to experiment with different ingredients and styles of beer. This has lead to some great and surprising outcomes.

The price of these premium preservative and chemical free beers and ciders is around half the price for similar products purchased at liquor stores. Products are packing in cans, bottles and kegs for special events.
