Today (28 May 2018) was Memorial Day in Washington DC and an American National holiday. Memorial Day honours the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting National cemeteries or memorials to pay respect and place flags on military graves.
Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organisations.

The National Memorial Day Parade held along Constitution Avenue in Washington, DC shares the story of American honour and sacrifice from across the generations. It is the largest event held on Memorial Day, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators to the National Mall.
The parade was a moving timeline of American military history from the American Revolution to the present day, honouring the fallen heroes. The parade incorporates marching bands, youth groups, floats, performers and veterans.

For the first time ever, an Australian Army contingent of 40+ personnel marched as part of the U.S ‘Centenary of Mateship’ honouring 100 years of service alongside the United States.
