Kotor Old Town & Dobrota Guide By The Progressive Traveller

by | Accommodation, Europe, Featured, Food, Montenegro, Travel

Welcome to my comprehensive guide to visiting Kotor and Dobrota Montenegro. I have visited these locations several times and I’ve had the opportunity to experience the unique charm of both places. My love for Montenegro, particularly these two areas, has led me to consider buying an investment property in Kotor Bay.

In this guide, I’ll share my insights and recommendations based on my personal experiences in June and September 2024.

Kotor Old Town: A Medieval Marvel

Kotor Old Town is situated on the coast of the Bay of Kotor, and is often referred to as the “fjord of the Mediterranean”. The Old Town of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by medieval walls that have protected the town from invaders for centuries.

Kotor Old Town is a popular tourist destination and getting busier each year attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. During peak tourist season (typically from May to September), multiple cruise ships arrive and depart daily. However, during the off-season, the number of cruise ships is considerably lower or even nonexistent.

Kotor Old Town: A Charming and Compact Community

The population of Kotor Old Town is approximately 1,500 people. It’s important to note that this figure refers specifically to the historic core of the city, not the entire municipality of Kotor, which includes surrounding areas such as Dobrota.

Kotor Old Town is a relatively small and compact area easily explored on foot. It is charming in every way and that is what makes it a very popular destination.

Here’s a list of the most popular attractions in Old Town Kotor.

  • Kotor Fortress: Walk along the fortress walls for panoramic views of the old town, Kotor Bay, and the majestic mountains. Starting in the heart of Kotor’s Old Town, the walk (climb) takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. There are 1,350 steps to the hilltop of the Kotor Fortress. Along the way, you’ll pass the serene Church of Our Lady of Remedy, offering a moment of respite amidst the ascent.
  • St. Tryphon Cathedral: Marvel at the intricate architecture of this 12th-century Romanesque cathedral. St. Tryphon’s Cathedral is open to visitors every day of the week, with a small admission fee.
  • Maritime Museum: Learn about Kotor’s rich maritime history through exhibits and artifacts.
  • Clock Tower: Climb to the top for stunning views of the old town. The tower in the heart of the town is a popular spot for tourists to take photos and an excellent meeting place.
  • Cathedral Square: Enjoy a leisurely stroll through this charming square, lined with cafes and shops. The Cathedral Square often hosts cultural events, such as concerts and festivals.
  • Walking Tour: Take a private walking tour and discover more about the old town

Traffic Congestion in High Season | Be Patient

From the beginning of June to the end of September, the roads from Tivat to Dobrota are very congested and can take over an hour to travel 10 kilometres. Visiting outside of the peak season will ensure a more desirable experience.

Boat Tours From Kotor and Dobrota with Get Your Guide

A visit to Kotor and Dobrota would not be complete without getting on the water in Kotor Bay. There are many boat operators offering pretty much the same tours.

In June 2024, I took a speedboat tour from Dobrota to Lady of the Rocks, Blue Cave, and Submarine tunnels. It was an enjoyable couple of hours and swimming in the Blue Cave was a highlight so don’t forget to wear your swimwear and apply lots of sunscreen in the summer months. The 4-hour excursion costs 40 euros.

Perast: A Must-Visit Coastal Gem

Nestled along the Montenegrin coast, Perast is a picturesque village renowned for its serene ambience and idyllic setting. Surrounded by majestic mountains and overlooking the shimmering Adriatic Sea, Perast offers a tranquil escape for visitors to nearby Kotor and Dobrota.

Perast Cake

Make sure you have a slice of Perast Cake. This traditional cake is made with a flaky pastry base, a creamy custard filling, and a layer of apricot jam. The pastry is often topped with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of chocolate glaze.Very yummy.

Convenient Access

Even if you don’t have your own car, getting to Perast is easy. The Blue Line Bus service, available from various stops around Kotor, including near the fresh food market outside the Sea Gate, provides convenient transportation to this charming coastal gem. If you are coming from the direction of Kotor Old Town, when you exit the bus there is an underground walkway to Perast which is not very visible. To catch the bus back to Kotor Old Town, the bus stop is at the very north end of Perast past the last beachside restaurant and boom gate.

A Journey to the Islands

While in Perast, don’t miss the opportunity to take a short boat trip to the artificial islands of St. George and Lady of the Rocks. These historic, picturesque islets are located just off the coast of Perast and offer stunning scenery and a glimpse into the region’s rich history.

The legal blood alcohol limit for driving in Montenegro is 0.03% which is one of the lowest legal limits in Europe and is strictly enforced by local authorities. It’s important to note that consuming even small amounts of alcohol can significantly increase your blood alcohol level, especially if you have a low tolerance. If you plan on driving in Montenegro, it’s safest to avoid alcohol consumption entirely.
