The first thing I remember about Zadar wasn’t an ancient church or Roman ruin. It was standing on the waterfront at sunset, listening to music created by the sea.
As waves rolled beneath the marble steps, the Sea Organ transformed the movement of the Adriatic into a haunting melody unlike anything I’d experienced before. Around me, locals gathered with gelato, families sat watching the sky change colour, and travellers quietly applauded as the sun disappeared beyond the islands.
Alfred Hitchcock famously described Zadar’s sunset as the most beautiful in the world. Whether or not that’s true, it’s certainly one of the most memorable ways to end a day in Croatia.
Of course, there’s much more to Zadar than its famous waterfront. Behind the ancient city walls lies over 3,000 years of history, Roman ruins, medieval churches, lively cafés and an atmosphere that feels far more relaxed than many of Croatia’s better-known coastal cities.

Why Visit Zadar?
One of the things I loved most about Zadar was how easy it was to enjoy. It has all the history you’d expect from a Croatian coastal city, but without the crowds that can sometimes make places like Dubrovnik feel overwhelming.
Everything is within walking distance. You can spend the morning exploring Roman ruins and centuries-old churches, enjoy a long seafood lunch overlooking the Adriatic, then finish the day listening to the Sea Organ as the sun sets over the islands.
What makes Zadar special is that it doesn’t try too hard to impress you. It’s a city that’s easy to explore at your own pace, where history, good food and everyday local life blend naturally together. Add beautiful sunsets, nearby national parks and easy ferry access to the islands, and it’s easy to see why so many travellers wish they’d stayed a little longer.
Things That Surprised Me About Zadar
A few things stood out during my visit that I wasn’t expecting.
- 🎵 The Sea Organ really does make music. It isn’t a recording. The sound is created naturally as waves push air through pipes hidden beneath the waterfront steps.
- 🌅 The sunsets really are spectacular. Alfred Hitchcock famously described Zadar’s sunset as the most beautiful in the world, and after spending an evening on the waterfront, it’s easy to understand why.
- 🏛️ The Old Town is compact. Most of Zadar’s main attractions are within easy walking distance, making it one of Croatia’s easiest cities to explore on foot.
- 🍒 Maraschino liqueur originated in Zadar. Made from locally grown marasca cherries, it’s still one of the city’s best-known specialties and worth trying during your visit.
- ⛴️ Zadar is more than just a destination. It’s also one of Croatia’s main ferry hubs, making it easy to explore nearby islands such as Ugljan, Dugi Otok and Pašman.

That depends on how you plan to explore the region. If you’re staying in Zadar’s Old Town, you can easily get around on foot. The main attractions, restaurants and waterfront are all within walking distance, so a car isn’t necessary while you’re in the city.
However, if you want to discover more of Croatia’s spectacular Dalmatian Coast, a hire car gives you far greater flexibility. It’s an excellent way to explore nearby national parks, coastal villages, beaches and viewpoints at your own pace, without being tied to organised tours or public transport schedules.
Driving in this part of Croatia is straightforward, with well-maintained roads, clear signage and scenic coastal routes. Parking is available throughout Zadar, although spaces within the Old Town are limited, so it’s generally easier to stay just outside the historic centre if you’re travelling by car.
💡 PT Tip: If you’re only visiting Zadar for a couple of days, I’d wait until you’re leaving the city before collecting a hire car. You’ll avoid parking hassles and only pay for the days you really need it.
Final Thoughts
Zadar is much more than the famous Sea Organ. What surprised me most was just how easy it was to enjoy. It’s a city that doesn’t need grand landmarks or endless attractions to impress. Instead, it’s the relaxed atmosphere, walkable Old Town, welcoming waterfront, excellent food and slower pace of life that make it such an enjoyable place to spend a few days.
It also makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding region. Whether you’re visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park, cruising through the Kornati Islands or discovering nearby beaches and coastal villages, you can return each evening to a city that feels comfortable, authentic and unhurried.
If you’re planning a Croatian road trip, don’t make the mistake of treating Zadar as simply an overnight stop. Stay a little longer, slow down and enjoy the city for what it is—a relaxed place where you’ll quickly feel at home and one you’ll probably wish you’d allowed more time to experience.
