Kotor Old Town & Dobrota, Montenegro Travel Guide

by | Montenegro, Accommodation, Europe, Featured, Food, Travel, Travel Tips

Kotor Old Town and neighbouring Dobrota are two of my favourite places in Montenegro. I’ve visited several times in different seasons and enjoyed everything from wandering the medieval laneways of UNESCO-listed Kotor to relaxing beside the waterfront promenade in Dobrota.

In fact, I loved the area so much that I purchased an investment apartment overlooking the Bay of Kotor, giving me even more reason to keep returning.

If you’re planning a Montenegro itinerary—perhaps after exploring neighbouring Albania—this guide covers the best things to do, where to stay, where to eat, and practical tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Kotor Old Town – Montenegro’s UNESCO Jewel

Set on the spectacular Bay of Kotor and surrounded by dramatic limestone mountains, Kotor Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Adriatic. Its maze of narrow stone laneways, charming squares, churches and centuries-old buildings are enclosed within impressive defensive walls that earned the town UNESCO World Heritage status.

The Bay of Kotor is often described as Europe’s southernmost fjord, although it is technically a submerged river canyon (ria). Whatever you call it, the scenery is breathtaking and one of Montenegro’s biggest attractions.

Kotor has become one of Montenegro’s most visited destinations. During the cruise season, several ships can arrive on the same day, bringing thousands of visitors into the compact Old Town. If you prefer quieter streets and a more relaxed atmosphere, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of April-May or September-October, when the weather is still pleasant but the crowds are generally smaller

Best Things to Do in Kotor Old Town

One of the things I love most about Kotor Old Town is its size. Unlike many European cities, you can comfortably explore the entire historic centre on foot. Its maze of narrow stone laneways, hidden courtyards and lively squares is filled with cafés, restaurants, boutique shops and fascinating history around every corner.

Although the Old Town is compact, there’s enough to keep you occupied for a full day, or longer if you enjoy slowing down and soaking up the atmosphere.

Here are the attractions I recommend not missing.

Climb Kotor Fortress

If you’re reasonably fit, climbing Kotor Fortress is one of the most rewarding experiences in Montenegro. Starting in the heart of the Old Town, the trail follows the ancient city walls for around 1,350 steps, taking approximately 45 to 60 minutes depending on your pace.

The reward is spectacular panoramic views over Kotor Old Town, the Bay of Kotor and the surrounding mountains. Along the way you’ll pass the beautiful Church of Our Lady of Remedy, making it a perfect place to pause before continuing the climb.

My tip: During summer, start early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Wear comfortable walking shoes and take plenty of water, especially between June and September.

Visit St Tryphon Cathedral

Dating back to the 12th century, St Tryphon Cathedral is one of Montenegro’s most important Romanesque churches. Inside you’ll find impressive architecture, religious artwork and a small museum showcasing centuries of local history. A modest admission fee applies.

See the Clock Tower and Cathedral Square

The historic Clock Tower is one of Kotor’s best-known landmarks and a popular meeting point within the Old Town. Nearby Cathedral Square is surrounded by cafés, restaurants and historic buildings, making it an ideal place to enjoy a coffee, lunch or simply watch the world go by.

Explore the Maritime Museum

Kotor’s rich maritime history comes to life at the Maritime Museum. Housed in a beautifully preserved Baroque palace, the museum displays naval artefacts, maps, weapons and exhibits that tell the story of Kotor’s long connection with the sea.

Join a Walking Tour

If it’s your first visit, I highly recommend joining a guided walking tour. Learning about Kotor’s Venetian history, defensive walls and local legends brings the Old Town to life in a way that’s difficult to appreciate on your own.

Traffic During Peak Season

One thing that surprises many first-time visitors is the amount of traffic around the Bay of Kotor during summer.

From early June through to the end of September, the coastal road between Tivat, Kotor and Dobrota can become heavily congested, particularly on days when multiple cruise ships are in port. A journey of around 10 kilometres can easily take an hour.

If your travel dates are flexible, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April, May, late September or October. You’ll generally enjoy lighter traffic, fewer crowds and pleasant weather while still experiencing everything that makes Kotor such a special destination.

Boat Tours From Kotor and Dobrota with Get Your Guide

A visit to Kotor and Dobrota would not be complete without getting on the water in Kotor Bay. There are many boat operators offering pretty much the same tours.

In June 2025, I took a speedboat tour from Dobrota to Lady of the Rocks, Blue Cave and Submarine tunnels. It was an enjoyable couple of hours taking in the magnificent views and swimming in the Blue Cave was a highlight so don’t forget to wear your swimwear and apply lots of sunscreen in the summer months.

GetYourGuide is my preferred tour operator and they offer an excellent variety of options. If you have a full day to explore the I can highly recommend the guided cruise with swim hop from either Tivat or Kotor.

Perast Cake

Make sure you have a slice of Perast Cake. This traditional cake is made with a flaky pastry base, a creamy custard filling, and a layer of apricot jam. The pastry is often topped with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of chocolate glaze.Very yummy.

Convenient Access

Even if you don’t have your own car, getting to Perast is easy. The Blue Line Bus service, available from various stops around Kotor, including near the fresh food market outside the Sea Gate, provides convenient transportation to this charming coastal gem. If you are coming from the direction of Kotor Old Town, when you exit the bus there is an underground walkway to Perast which is not very visible. To catch the bus back to Kotor Old Town, the bus stop is at the very north end of Perast past the last beachside restaurant and boom gate.

A Journey to the Islands

While in Perast, don’t miss the opportunity to take a short boat trip to the artificial islands of St. George and Lady of the Rocks. These historic, picturesque islets are located just off the coast of Perast and offer stunning scenery and a glimpse into the region’s rich history.

Legal Blood Alcohol Limit in Montenegro

The legal blood alcohol limit for driving in Montenegro is 0.03% which is one of the lowest legal limits in Europe and is strictly enforced by local authorities. It’s important to note that consuming even small amounts of alcohol can significantly increase your blood alcohol level, especially if you have a low tolerance. If you plan on driving in Montenegro, it’s safest to avoid alcohol consumption entirely.

If you have a few drinks then the best and most reliable taxi operator for Kotor and Tivat municipalities is Red Taxi. https://www.redtaxikotor.com/RED-TAXI-ENG.html
