The Progressive Traveller Goes To Toledo
Toledo Train Station
Toledo is only 30 minutes by train from Madrid and the old town is within walking distance of the beautiful Toledo train station with its impressive clock tower. The approaching view from the railway station is breathtakingly spectacular and the photographic opportunities are endless!
The Walled City Of Toledo
The River Tagus runs alongside the city walls and nature trials hug the banks of the river which meanders its way around most of the city. The Bisagra gate of Moorish origin incorporates the main access to the city within the walls.
The beauty of Toledo is found in the maze of streets, churches, bridges, palaces, monasteries, synagogues and mosques you stumble upon. Known as the ‘city of the three cultures’, as for centuries Christians, Arabs and Jews lived together behind these walls.
Toledo is truly impressive; this UNESCO World Heritage site, is beautiful preserved from the outside in. It is bursting with fabulous monuments including the Cathedral, Monastery of San Juan del los Reyes, Tavera Hospital, Alcázar (fortress), Santa María la Blanca, church of San Tomé and Alcántara bridge.
Toledo Visagoda Museum
The Visagoda Museum was a real find. The Museum is located inside the 13th century Mudejar Church of San Roman with well-preserved 13th century frescos covering the walls of the church. The museum has an excellent archaeological collection from the 6, 7 and 8th centuries of the historic Visgoths civilisation. Entry is only 1E.
Tough Toledo Steel
Toledo Steel is famous for its unusually hard steel which has been traditionally used for sword making since 500BC. There are dozens of shops in Toledo specialising in steel products including swords, figurines, amour and knickknacks.
Cathedral of Santa María de Toledo
The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Toledo is large and tall. Capturing the height of the cathedral is difficult and photographers and friends go to great lengths to get that perfect photo. A group of Asian girlfriends had me in fits of laughter from their photography antics.
Toledo The Perfect Day Trip
Toledo is the perfect city for strolling through and the wonderful pedestrian zones are filled with locals, children playing and visitors. Toledo can’t be rushed! Allow 5-6 hours for a solid day trip. Whatever direction you take, you will appreciate it in all its glory.
